Turn off Netflix. Pick up a book.
Not just any book. A really, really good book. One that’ll give you courage, fill you with hope, make you cry or leave you laughing (or maybe all four). Lucky for you, many of our Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 winners are also talented authors who have written books like this, and they’re joining us every month to host our new WXN Virtual Book Club.
This is an exciting opportunity to hear readings directly from the authors themselves and enjoy an open discussion with a community of bright and inspiring women. Like most book clubs, though, space is limited, so make sure you sign up today… and get ready to feel inspired!
Join us July 16 as we introduce our next author in our
WXN Virtual Book Club series – Samra Zafar.
Samra is a best-selling Author, award-winning speaker and educator and Human Rights Activist. She faced years of abuse after arriving in Canada as a teenage bride in a hastily arranged marriage, but nothing could stop Samra Zafar from pursuing her dreams. At sixteen, Samra Zafar had big dreams. She was going to go to university and forge her own path. Then, with almost no warning, those dreams were snatched away when she was suddenly married to a stranger at seventeen and had to leave behind her family in Pakistan and move to Canada. Her new husband and his family vowed that the marriage and the move would be a fulfillment of her dream, not a betrayal of it. But as the walls of their home slowly became a prison, Samra realized their promises were empty ones. Desperate to get out and refusing to give up, she hatched an escape plan for herself and her two daughters. Slowly, over the months and years, she found the strength not only to build a new future and walk away from her past, but also to become a global advocate for women and girls in similar situations.
In this exciting opportunity, you will get to hear a reading directly from Samra and enjoy an open discussion with a community of bright and inspiring women. She will read from her book ‘A Good Wife: Escaping the Life I Never Chose’. A Good Wife tells the harrowing and inspiring story of a young girl who grows into a woman of courage and power in the face of oppression. This is a modern day fairy tale where the heroine saves her own life.
